(Seoel)- The Kingdom of the Netherlands walked-off against Chinese Taipei in a win that didn’t come easy. Jair Jurrjens got the start but had a hard time to keep the pitch count down. After 3 innings of work he reached the limit of 65 pitches, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 4.
Lars Huijer took over in the 4th with a promissing 1,2,3 inning on 8 pitches before the Netherlands scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th to take a 4-2 lead.
But in the top of the 5th Huijer was hit hard including a homerun from C-H Chang. By the end of the inning Chinese Taipei had scored the go ahead run, leading the game 5-4.
Bolsenbroek pitched 3 strong innings in the 6th,7th and 8th with only 2 hits, no runs and no walks. But the Dutch didn’t score either until the bottom of the 8th. Didi Gregorius hit his 3rd double of the night, which made Bogaerts score the much needed 5th run.
Martis pitched a solid 9th before the Netherlands loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the final inning. With pinch runner Dwayne Kemp on 3rd, Jurickson Profar walked to win the game.
The win of the Netherlands not only eliminated Chinese Taipei but also Korea, while underdog Israel will advance to 2nd round as well. The Netherlands will play Israel to decide who will be the winner of POOL A.
Chinese Taipei and Korea will play their final game tomorrow with nothing at stake. Both countries probably had much bigger expectations a few days ago.
