Dutch Hoofdklasse: Holland Series 2015, game 1

(Rotterdam)- After L&D Amsterdam Pirates was ousted by Curacao Neptunus two weeks ago, the Rotterdam based team took on Corendon Kinheim in game one of the Holland Series.

Starter for Neptunus was Diegomar Markwell, who posted a 9-2 record and a 2.06 ERA during the regular season.  Starter for Corendon Kinheim was David Bergman who had a 8-2 record and a 1.90 ERA.
David Bergman lasted six innings in which he gave up nine hits and three walks and struck out two. Diegomar Markwell cruised through eight innings. He gave up six hits, walked one and rung up seven.

For two innings both pitchers kept their opponent in check rather well. But in the third, Neptunus started a rally that put three runs on the board. With one out, Dwayne Kemp doubled down the left field line, followed by a walk drawn by Benjamin Dille. Dwayne Kemp opened the score from second as Raily Legito singled to left field. A single by Gianison Boekhoudt and a sac fly by Christian Diaz drove in two more runs.

One inning later, Neptunus added another run to their total to give them a 4-0 lead. All Kinheim could do was score a run in the top of the sixth when Kevin Moesquit scored from second base on a single to shortstop, hit by Philip Ortez.

Eventually Neptunus scored three more runs: two in the bottom of the sixth and one in the eighth.

As you  may understand, Diegomar Markwell earned the win as he gave up one run, while David Bergman gave up six runs (three earned) for he loss. Bergman wasn’t really helped by his defense as  his infield committed three errors.

Best hitter for Neptunus was third baseman Raily Legito, who went 2 for 3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored. Kevin Moesquit went 2 for 4 with a run scored for Kinheim.

The score may indicate that Corendon Kinheim was outhit by Curacao Neptunus, but that wasn’t really the case. Neptunus collected 10 hits and Kinheim 7. The problem with the hits that Kinheim produced was that they were spread out too much in the game. They never really started a rally. They had runners in scoring position three times but scored only once. Kinheim played rather uninspired, like they never believed in their own chances. Or perhaps it was that Diegomar Markwell was flat out dominant.

Tomorrow game two will be played in Rotterdam again. Then coming Thursday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary), the circus will move to Haarlem.

Here are some impressions of the game:
